This place has the capacity for 60 infants from 0 to 3 years and there is a professional staff for the care and maintenance of the basic needs of the child. Casa Cuna de San Juan is a place where all members have one thing in common the love for the children. It is a formal helping community non-organization. The love and the interest of all this people makes me write this post about this place. Unfortunately, in Puerto Rico there are many cases where children are abused, abandoned and even killed by the negligence of their parents. Most of these people who abuse their children know the scope of projects such as Casa Cuna or how to apply the necessary help for your particular problem.

Hope Puerto Rico have more of this places soon so we don’t have to see again in the news another notice from an abused child, but in reality what we need most is that children are not abused in the world.

If you want more information about Casa Cuna you can check this site http://www.casacunadesanjuan.com There you will find photos, contact information, how you can be a volunteer and much more.

Isla de Cabras

Isla de Cabras is an island located at the entrance to the bay of San Juan in Puerto Rico. Isla de Cabras currently houses: The Fort San Juan de la Cruz, also known as El Cañuelo, a recreational park that opened in 2005, a shooting range of local police. However, this island has had many uses throughout its history.

El Cañuelo is a spanish fortification that has a strategic location at the entrance to the bay of San Juan, Isla de Cabras offered a strategic point advantage in case of a crossfire in conjunction with the Fort San Felipe del Morro was located on the other side of the Bay in order to prevent the entry of invading ships. Also from this place guarded the entrance to the Bayamon River on the other side of the island.

Leprosario: the patients of leprosy (Hansen’s disease) were confined to the leper colony that was built-in the late nineteenth century in Isla de Cabras. On December 17, 1876, the governor Second de la Portilla laid the foundation stone of the project. In 1883, completed construction of the Leprosario. But people believed that the colony was established before the construction of the structure.

Shooting Range and Recreation Park in recent years, land belonging to Fort Amezquita were turned into a shooting range and training for police in Puerto Rico. The remaining land remained in dispute for several years but were finally transferred to the Department of Recreation and Sport of the island. Some time ago, opened its doors the Isla de Cabras Recreational Park, which has several places of rest and gazebos for the family. Also, the park has access to the beach for swimming and fishing.

Isla de Cabras is a community location that is now interesting for me, because I live near by and I don’t used to visit. But when I was looking for something to talk about I see information about it and I go\t really interested. The fact that there in the nineteenth century they used to confine the leprosy caught my attention. Leprosy has accompanied mankind for thousands of years and infected  were isolated in leper colonies. Ignorance about the disease forced government to make coins, paper money, and vouchers restricted to the leper colony, 15 countries benefited from these rules. There are still collector’s items as silent witnesses of an era marked by ignorance and fear of disease was stigmatized as one of the worst in the history of mankind.
